Old Testament

Additional perspectives on the theme of “It’s a Military Term” on validating theology by looking at the Old Testament.

New Testament Doctrine of Ephesians — Radix Fidem

“The whole point of this two-volume series is to highlight the continuity between the Old and New Testaments.”

 On Twitter, Timothy F. Kauffman

At the first Church council (Acts 10), “the deciding factor was the testimony of the Prophets:”

“All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins.” — Acts 10:43

This discussion on the Berean Approach

“The Bereans heard what Paul said, and then checked it against scripturethe Old Testament—to see if the two things matched”

Let’s look at the Old Testament and see where this language (“hand and forehead”) is used: in the use of unleavened bread of Passover

Photius called the Paulicians heretics for allegedly rejecting the Old Testament because he was unfamiliar with the words of Jesus: John 10:8. Photius accused the Paulicians of heresy due to his own ignorance of scripture.

Peter of Vaux-de-Cernay called the Paulicians heretics because they said that God had two wives. Peter was unfamiliar with Ezekiel 23. Peter accused the Paulicians of heresy due to his own ignorance of scripture.

 On Twitter, Timothy F. Kauffman

“When a New Testament writer or speaker provides two Old Testament witnesses to support his teaching, it is best to go find out what his two witnesses said and did. James calls Abraham (Genesis 22) and Rahab (Joshua 2) to the stand to testify of his meaning.”

It was their profession of faith that was tried, so it is their profession of faith that was justified. James uses “justify” here as Jesus did in Matthew 11:19: “Wisdom is justified of her deeds.” Deeds do not make wisdom wise. They only demonstrate the fruit of actual wisdom.

Deeds do not make faith saving. They demonstrate saving faith. Jesus was made perfect by suffering (Heb 2:10, 5:19). His suffering did not make Him into Someone He wasn’t. They demonstrated Who He was. This is how James described the perfection of faith by works (James 2:22).

Is the New Testament Relevant? (from 2017)

If you have the OT, the knowledge that Jesus was the [Old Testament] Jewish Messiah, that he fulfilled the [Old Testament] roles of prophet, king, priest, and sacrifice, along with enough historical context and narrative, you have enough to build Christianity.

Of course parts of the NT are important, as stated above. But the vast majority is optional. The complete OT and a key summary of the NT is sufficient to maintain Christianity.

Ambiguity

Another perspective on the theme of “Ambiguity in the Bible” on ambiguity in biblical language.

Misreading Scripture, parts one, two, three — Catacomb Resident

“I’ve taught for years that biblical languages aren’t like English, and that translation is more art than science.”

And for words in the Bible that we simply don’t have in English? We end up pretty confused by how the Hebrew word chesed is translated by many different English words, none of which captures the meaning it had for Hebrew people — loyalty, lovingkindness, mercy, faithfulness. And Paul gave us a whole list of words to talk about the Fruit of the Spirit in Greek, but it’s only one fruit. There was no Greek equivalent to the Hebrew concept.

“In the Bible, agency (and thus, motive) is not required, nor is action (try John 14:1 about hearts). It’s rather odd how we turn simply words into expressions that can mean widely different ranging ideas based on word order, but then we expect a translated Bible to be literal and direct, as if there were no figures of speech.”

“The final issue in language is the American preference for brutal clarity over ambiguous beauty. The amount of metaphor and figures of speech in English are massive, but our underlying thought process prefers propositional clarity when it comes to something so important as eternal truth. We get impatient with the Hebrew habit of parables and picturesque wording.”

On Wikipedia

Confirmation of our finding in “The Icons of Feminism, Part 1” and in “Eschatology: Ten and Three Horns” (footnote 1) that Wikipedia’s citations in historical topics are often incorrect.

On Twitter, @realerjoetalley (10 tweet thread)

…and more

On 1 Timothy 2:11-15

In “Bespoke Epistles, Part 2“, I discussed how my views of 1 Timothy 2 have changed (or not) over time. What are the chances that my view would change if I watched this?

Mike Winger takes a year to produce a comprehensive—nearly twelve hours long—analysis of 1 Timothy 2:11-15, concluding that the Christian Patriarchal view is the correct one.

“The whole point of this two-volume series is to highlight the continuity between the Old and New Testaments.”

    Or better said here

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” MATTHEW 5:17

“The final issue in language is the American preference for brutal clarity over ambiguous beauty. This is why so many can’t understand that GBFM is a metaphysical or if some prefer the term mystical repersentation of ALL MEN not just one or a few.

“I’ve taught for years that biblical languages aren’t like English, and that translation is more art than science.”

Essentially the same thing as GBFM is basically the HEro=MAN of a thousand faces and so therefore he repersents the GREAT BOOKS FOR MEN or the collective knowledge of MAN-whom was gifted that knowledge by their creator ,the giver of all life.

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” — Matthew 5:17

Fulfill is hard (impossible?) to explain as mere propositions. It contains variations encompassing hints of replace, complete, abolish, supersede, and accomplish (e.g. Hebrews 10), but the emphasis is on continuity and transition, not destruction or elimination.

Christ represented the whole of the Old Testament. Christ insisted that tradition could not override the Old Testament:

“…they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.” — Matthew 15:6

If we are going by The Bible as “indeed” the Word of God, and that indeed, God had a plan from the day sin entered the world from the time of Adam and Eve…..to reconcile us with him

Well, this plan was fulfilled by Jesus.

Not on conditions, or if / then “math statements” not by obscure vesres always taken out of full context from the regarding chapter. Not through a “red pill lense” nor by what came after Christ (Acts et al)

From my reading of John, it seems that the writer wants to convey to the reader:

*Jesus is who he says he is
        *Jesus is God
*Jesu was fully man and fully God

This is backed by what the Hebrew Prophets foretold what would come from the “old testament”

The real test is…..do we believe it? I can honestly say from my observations over the past decade. No, we do not

We keep reading into, and “supposing” what Jesus would do, or what God “really” meant.

If believers are going to “suppose” or “imagine if Jesus was indeed here today on Earth” I would be wary of them immediately. All of them.

As a believe in Christ, you have the Bible. The early folks didnt even have THAT. They “trusted, heard, believed”

The wheel has been and still is constantly being re-invented by “supposed” believers concerning these matters.

And I’m an man with a 92 IQ, who is “supposedly” blinded by blue-pill-thinking and from reading the Bible I dont see half of what they “supposed” elect are talking about.

Perhaps indeed, I am too stupid to get it, but the words of Jesus himself dont seem that complicated

          MOD,

i was thinking back from mid ’19 through summer ’21 that the ‘sphere wanted to be a united brotherhood for all MEN then i kept seeing how you at sf and that ED Kennedy guy @ sharkly’s was being treated and i knew the old”confrontational” &”contrarian” to dogmatic PUA/ red pill fundamentalists ”advice that is foolproof”was needed more than the brotherly love and ”unifying”(which began after certain events a few years before in my life)professorGBFM version of GBFM so that version essentially came back without all the zlolzzlolzing and better english/editing skills.

As August ’21 became mid-September ’21 i was going back to the more ”agressive” version of GBFM and especially after that swinger mike post at sf where they first were saying LIZ was bad and she said ”ban me if you think it’s nessassary” for going against the majoritys echo-chamber there.

But i didn’t really feel more” agressive” in my actual commenting until the day before Christmas at Spawnys as a new commenter there had such a big problem with i and i left spawnys a few days later and i should have never returned there as our friend sharkly ”welcomed” me back there a few months later like the ‘sphere as a whole ”welcomed” you since 2016.

          In other words?
i knew before January ’22 why you use to say at sf ”I wouldn’t want to be in heaven with any of you here truthfully ” or ”be your son-in-law either”.

“Perhaps indeed, I am too stupid to get it, but the words of Jesus himself dont seem that complicated”

I’ve never found the words of Jesus to be complicated to follow. I more-or-less know what Jesus wants me to do. On the other hand, I’ve always found it more difficult convincing others of what I find not-very-complicated. Is that strange or normal?

Wonderful read! Thank you! Mark was on GB News frequently until he was “sacked”
I think recall him covering for Limbaugh on and off over the years…..

I’m still a Mod. Always will be and have been since the ending of my high school years. Its a subculture and everything that sadly has brought me great pain, and some regrets too!

Yes, I wear a parka. Yes I had a scooter (San Francisco years)…..will be getting another one soon. Yes, this movie when I saw it in 1985? Changed my life. Yes, as a fan of British culture……especially music and some humor….I am a Mod and always will be.

The movie is very tragic and sad….and something I thought when I was young would never fall victim of. I did. Mods (though few left in England, and fewer here in the USA) usually fall into pills or drugs of sorts. Thankfully I have been clean almost 20 years. Its a good watch, but I will warm for language and partial nudity.

The Mods that are left in the USA and England are usually my age. Sure, some younger ones identify….but like anything good, its over.

Today…the scenes are blended. You will have a party with soul music, two-tone ska, sixties British RnB (Mod) and some other British pop thrown in. Only off the vinyl standard is the one thing that still is “pure”

In college I was accused of “dressing for church everyday” and once harassed by a bunch of guys on a motorcycles in San Francisco…calling me a fag. (I had a 1965 Lambretta scooter back then). Also my music didnt align with my peers. Sure, I knw some of the big hits of the 1980’s as a teen, and the muci of the early 1990’s in college……but my love for The Who, Small Faces, The Beatles (who were not Mods).

I still keep my hair short and I can still dance all night (though getting harder as I get older) and I fight harder now to keep myself slender. I own six suits, tailored.

Its still a distinctly English thing….and I met a few when I was there in Manchester. No one gets “it” anymore, and maybe they shouldnt. The younger ones its about “fashion” more than attitude (like skater clothing / culture in the USA….it used to be about clothing and gear for skating, its now “fashion”)

I still dont like rockers, and yes…..the 1980’s still sucked.

      -jason 🙂

The Who “love reign ov’r me” with clips from “qudrophenia”
The song was recorded in 1973, but used for this movie which is from 1979. The eary WHo were def Mods…by the 1970’s…….no way.

Will be going to Santa Rosa for a Redwoods Ride with the local scooter club there in May. DJ-ing for the after party as well! My friend Stephen (and fellow Mod) Stephen is letting me borrow his 1962 Vespa for the ride

This is very cool. Never saw the movie (I’ll give it a look sometime).
Now I know where you got your handle from!
Honestly, I was always a bit curious…I hadn’t heard of “Mod” until now.
      🙂

        Liz,

To your more devout Christian sensibilities than mine. The movie does have a few scenes of partial nudity. Language warning as well. No, its not a cuss fest.

Its a good story. A good movie. Youth, coming of age. A time that was already long gone by the time I came of age….but something that was indeed pure to me. A connection to my hertiage. My love for the era and the style, and fashion. A time that was much more self-assured than now…..or then (1979) when this movie came out or when I first saw it.

Sting is in it. We Mods joke “he cant dance” (then or now) but it was when he was still quite young and still with “The Police”

      ”“jump the Gun” clothing”

Was that the place you had on a post on your old blog or was that another store?

i just remember you had pics of yourself in the store on that post.

      1. Lastmod

That was “Pretty Green” in Manchester. Mens clothing. Owned by Oasis member Liam Gallagher. It might have been “Ben Sherman” in London. It wasnt Harrods. I did not take any phots while shopping there.

    2. Surfdumb

Nice looking video. Is the song modern or original in it?
      I’m glad you liked it.
I don’t understand the friction between rockers and mods, other than being young men of the same age with different interests.
I liked music like Scott does. But it makes me think about the Smiths. Wasn’t Morrisey dressed like a mod?
So you were an early teen when you saw the movie? Impressive maturity that it grabbed you. I was still watching Three Stooges in my early teens, Big Time wrestling, Sir Graves Ghastly, and Abbott and Costello. Yes GBFM, Godzilla too.
I’m surprised I never saw the movie -thank you for the language warning.
Funny, I was neutral on the Who in the 70s and 80s, but I like those songs better now. Who even writes any story like Pinball Wizard nowadays? Never liked the Stones, and still don’t, same for the Beatles.

      1. Surfdumb

If you were cool in the early 80s in the suburbs, then you looked down on Led Zeppelin. “Overly produced” as I uncritically mimicked the spirit of the age.
70s music was I all heard on the radio though. Then new wave came along, and I liked that and techno and club music. I had a cherry red 66 Nova with a 283 V-8, and listened to a lot of motown in that. More expensive than a scooter, but I wish I had never sold it. That was as close to a “mod” that I got. I saw a mod or two at the clubs and liked the look, but was never original or mature enough to break from the pack. Too bad, because it looks good.
Back to Zeppelin- showing my herd mentality here, since they are often the most popular band, but I do like them alot. Ah well, I’ve outted myself as tasteless in your eyes probably.

        1. Lastmod

Sure in the 1980’s……..hated Led Zeppelin. Now? They were and still are amazing.
I sold my scooter when I left San Francisco to help get me to Fresno. I got 6K for it. Vintage Lambrettas and Vespas sell very well now if they are running.

Some of the 1980’s stuff has indeed aged better than I thought. Like I’ve mentioned to Scott, it was a time that was very sad for me overall. Stuck in the country. No friends. Hated school (but I did stay out of trouble, and I did my homework and got “passable” grades). A very sick brother. Parents that meant well…and they did indeed love me, was not abused or neglected……but they honestly didnt know what to do with me at times. They also were very in love with each other, and my dad once said in 1987 or thereabouts “Im married to your mother. Not you. She comes before you or anything in this house. Got it?”

Dad needed wood splitted on a weekend? Yes, I did it. Mom required me again to “cancel” plans to help with my brother. Yes, rolled my eyes…..and did it.

By the time I hit college I was very socially stunted. I may have looked 19, or 20…..but my socail skills were that of a 12 year old on many levels. I dressed well of course, had my records but it was hard to make friends. I had lived in West Germany, boys school…..so I was used to being away from home, and I didnt have friends or a girl, or a social scene I was homesick for.

I think thats why when I moved to California in 1994, there were no issues with it. Today, I DO miss the Adirondack Mountains where I grew up. A lot actually.

LA is so cold and impersonal because its such a car centric area. NYC, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco you still have neighborhoods. People do still walk. Take the subway…..bus. LA, its not like that at all. Yes, the weather is actaully great here…….thats its only big selling point now it has. Even inthe 1990’s in LA, you could get a one bedroom apt or studio for under 1000.00 in an okay area. No way today.

In some parts of the Amish community, I have read that “not every boy growing up is going to be able to own a farm now.” Like in LA, an aspiring actor, or dancer, or musician, or student in theater…..production or otherwise CANT afford to live in LA unless he has inherited wealth with ten roommates. If I was living here in the 1990’s, I could have made a decent living as a full time DJ. No way now…..all the DJs I know have a “regular” job(s) as well.

I wish I had the car you had back in the 1980’s. I had a Plymouth Reliant K-car! I didnt have a scooter because the environment of where I lived wasnt conductive to that….but I did have a snowmobile!

My parents did have a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner (340). Wish they kept that! They traded it in when I was about 5 and got a station wagon

        2. Lastmod

I drifted to more “soul” and RnB and Motown and Northern Soul as I drifted through college and beyond. Im Mod, but my music focus is mostly sixtoes RnB, rare Motown, and Northern Soul

Northern Soul classic “You’ll Get Enough” by The Delfonics from about 1968. The dancer is Levanna. She’s amazing. She is dancing in the “Yes” club on Princess Street in Manchester. I danced here all night in 2019. It was a “Mod” club in the sixties, but drifted into “strict” Soul by the 1970’s. By the 1970’s Mods had splintered off into the soul scene, Ska, the RudeBoy / Suedhead / Skinhead scenes…..and Punk later for many. In Britain, for their “subcultures” in post war history….Mod was their “starting” point…..and of course taking a nod from the USA on many areas, but making it their own.

          Good convo

      That would be “Pretty Green”

What I liked about the “mens shops” in England was that MEN worked there. I got to Nordstroms to get a hem adjusted on a suit or shop for shirts in the MENS department and only women seem to be working there. This is in LA and San Francisco.

Even when I was working at Gap in high school……..I was one of three guys that worked there out of a total crew of 25, not including the managers.

Heaven FORBID a man may need help with clothing! A woman will flatter in the mens department in a shop or store, a man in a mens dept will be frank with you if he’s good or likes the trade. At Gap, shorter than average men should never wear warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows). It amplifies their height, and their weight.

I would tell guys this…they would thank me. Back in the late 1980’s Gap still had comission sales. Not much, but it could add up. The women I worked with didnt care……most were catty anyway, always puzzled me to why guys would always hit on them. They were straight up mean. Oh…..she’s hot and that is all that matters (rolls eyes)
