Galapagos Volcano

Part 1 of 2

Volcanic Activity

This is Sierra Negra on Isabela Island. The volcano actively smokes, but there are no lava flows on the surface. Sierra Negra last erupted in 2018. We got remarkably close to the peak of this volcano and we let our cameras get us the rest of the way there.

This, above, is as high as we were permitted to go. The cameras did the rest:

Sulfur Deposits

Sulfur deposits were strewn around everywhere.

Sulfuric Vent

We walked right up to and around this vent. It was hot, smoking, and the toxic fumes smelled like sulfur.
