Hypergamy and Weight

Cremieux

Here is the BMI distribution by sex in the United States. Curiously, this is one of a few traits where women tend to be more variable than men!

One of the main reasons I think hypergamy is believed, despite being an illusion, is because statistics are not intuitive. People just don’t naturally see how statistical effects underlie reality and so grasp onto other (incorrect) explanations.

While most traits one has, such as intelligence, has greater male variability, weight (in particular) has greater female variability. What this means, in practical terms, is that there is a significant percentage men and women who will assortatively pair with someone who has a different BMI than they do.

In practice, women are much more likely to be at the weight extremes in a relationship: either much skinnier or much fatter. After all the normal assortative pairings, there are two main scenarios remaining:

The first scenario is where a moderately attractive man couples with a very attractive (i.e. skinny) woman. You’ll see this all the time with average attractive men somehow scoring above-average attractive women.

The second (and more common) scenario is where a titanic moo cow marries an average-looking man.

Let’s examine these two scenarios in the context of the Red Pill and hypergamy.

In terms of mate selection, most men consider weight to be a far more important factor than women do. Consequently, the first scenario is viewed—by both men and women—as only a minor aberration. Nobody complains about it (unless they are jealous). By contrast, the second scenario is considered—by Red Pill men—to be a major distortion: an example, and perhaps a proof, of hypergamy. Men complain about this all the time.

But, here is the thing. Ultimately, some fat woman with a BMI of 48 will have to match with some man with a BMI of, say, 38, or else both man and woman will have to remain single. There simply are not enough “average” women to go around for all the “average” men. Many men—especially those who don’t marry young—will have to marry a “worse” woman, or else remain single.

This is why so many dating sites are filled with ugly women. It is why there are so many tales of woe. It is why the leaked images from the ill-fated women’s app Tea revealed copious numbers of mostly unattractive women. These women are not successful in their attempts at “hypergamy.” Meanwhile, all the “higher quality” men, having missed out of their early opportunities, remain unattached because their standards are too high.

But of course this isn’t really about hypergamy. If marriages were arranged and mandatory, thus eliminating hypergamous choice, those so-called hypergamous pairings of average man and below-average women would still be happening… only they would just be normal, everyday common matches.

You do the math.
