Saturday Misadventures

As much as I enjoy posting on a blog, there are times when I desire to do other things. A few weeks ago my posting took an unexpected and unexplained bump because I picked up a new (mis)adventure:

Real Analysis — Jay Cummings

That’s right, I’m teaching myself Real Analysis. That’s a higher-level undergraduate course for math majors that occurs chronologically after college Calculus, but sits conceptually between high school math and college Calculus. It covers the mathematical foundation of Calculus itself.

(Real Analysis is the reason that when Christians say “God is infinite” a mathematician should ask them to explain “Which infinite?”)

The course is supposed to be a proof-based course that many consider to be quite challenging. I’m not exactly good at proofs, so I wasn’t really planning on learning it right now. But, I started reading it to see what it was about and got hooked. I’ve been enjoying it immensely. I never expected a math textbook to be so riveting.

I had been planning on doing this instead:

Abstract Algebra is the college course that one takes after Discrete Math, one of my favorite math courses in college. It is somewhat more discrete and logic-based than continuous and algebra-based. I guess Abstract Algebra will have to be my next misadventure.

What will I do after that? Who knows. Maybe I’ll learn Combinatorics, Topology, or something to do with advanced statistics. For now, if I randomly disappear for a while, it’s probably because I’m exploring my love of math.

But, even if you don’t share my love of math, don’t forget to take time this weekend to consider the greatest misadventure of all that occurred roughly 2,000 years ago and how that turned out to actually be the greatest adventure of all (come Sunday morning). Hopefully we will all, Dear Readers, get to experience true infinity together one day.

i was thinking similar to this by way of this 1984 song for the last few days.:

Alphaville – Forever Young ~Official Video

    Lyrics
Let’s dance in style, let’s dance for a while
Heaven can wait, we’re only watching the skies
Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst
Are you gonna drop the bomb or not?
Let us die young or let us live forever
We don’t have the power, but we never say never
Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip
The music’s for the sad men
Can you imagine when this race is won?
Turn our golden faces into the sun
Praising our leaders, we’re getting in tune
The music’s played by the, the madmen
    Forever young
I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever?
    Forever and ever
    Forever young
I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever?
    Forever young
Some are like water, some are like the heat
Some are a melody and some are the beat
Sooner or later, they all will be gone
    Why don’t they stay young?
It’s so hard to get old without a cause
I don’t want to perish like a fading horse
Youth’s like diamonds in the sun
    And diamonds are forever
So many adventures couldn’t happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams swinging out of the blue
    We’ll let them come true
    Forever young
I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever?
    Forever and ever
    Forever young
I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever?
    Forever, and ever
    Forever young
    I wanna be forever young
Do you really want to live forever? (Forever young)

See how those lyrics symbolize what ALL Christians want?

How does it also parallels the following Scripture that ties into Derek’s current series?

Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?Ezekiel 33:11-Berean Standard Bible

For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death, declares the Lord GOD. So repent and live!-Ezekiel 18:32-Berean Standard Bible
